1. About Oslo Bysykkel

Oslo Bysykkel is a bike-sharing service that gives you access to approximately 3,000 city bikes, which you can ride between around 260 docking stations within and around Ring 3. You can easily unlock a city bike via the app, giving you an affordable, fast and environmentally friendly way to get around the city. “Bysykkel (city bike)” refers to both manual and electric bicycles.

Oslo Bysykkel is developed and operated by Bauer Media Outdoor Norge AS, hereinafter referred to as Bauer, in cooperation with the Oslo municipality. To use the city bikes, you must have purchased a product and registered with a valid phone number and payment information. The service works as described under “How it works”. Opening hours are specified in “About Oslo Bysykkel”.

When you accept these terms of use and privacy terms, you enter into an agreement with Bauer. This also applies if you pay for a product and unlock a bicycle through the Ruter app. In the event of misuse of the service, Bauer may permanently block access to the service; see section 6 for more information.

2. How to use Oslo Bysykkel

2.1 You must be 18 years of age or older to purchase products and use Oslo Bysykkel. If you are over 15 years old, you may use manual bicycles if you have written authorisation from a guardian, which must be sent to customer service at post@oslobysykkel.no. Please note that you may be liable for compensation for a damaged or lost bicycle even if you are under 18 years old, cf. the Norwegian Compensation Act. Electric city bikes may only be used by people over the age of 18.

2.2 A city bike product is personal, and you and Bauer are the only parties to this agreement. You are the sole user of the service. For this reason, you may not lend the city bike or user account to others. If you lose your phone or it is stolen, this must be reported to post@oslobysykkel.no to prevent misuse of your account.

2.3 Registration and purchase are completed in our app, available for iPhone and Android, on our website oslobysykkel.no/en/buy, or through the Ruter app. You may also activate a product by redeeming a value code you have received. To use the service, you must register your phone number and any other information required at any given time, add an active payment card/payment method, and purchase a product. Please also see our Terms of purchase for more information.

2.4 A product gives you full access to the service for the period during which the product is valid. The types of products available for sale, their prices and duration may vary. You may only have one active product at a time.

2.5 An active product allows you to unlock city bikes through the app. Use the Oslo Bysykkel app to find available city bikes and parking spaces. You may only unlock one city bike at a time. Oslo Bysykkel cannot guarantee that there will always be an available city bike where you wish to start a trip, or an available lock for parking where you wish to end it.

2.6 Only one person is permitted on the city bike at a time. The maximum total weight on the bike is 95 kg.

2.7 You may use the city bike for the number of minutes included in your product before you must lock it in a docking station. If you fail to return the city bike before the included time expires, you will be charged for extended rental according to the applicable rates for your product.

2.8 The city bike must not be used in forests and fields, or off ordinary roads.

2.9 You can always return a city bike to an available lock, even when the system is closed for the night. You must always check the app for confirmation that the city bike has been returned.

2.10 If you do not receive confirmation in the app that the city bike has been returned, it is still registered as being in your use. Try parking the city bike again by lifting the seat and pushing the front of the bike firmly into the lock. Alternatively, try another lock. Do not pull on the city bike immediately to check whether it is locked, as this may disrupt the locking process. Electric city bikes also have a lock on the rear wheel. It may take a few seconds for this to engage. Check the app again for confirmation.

If you are unsuccessful, take a photo of the city bike clearly showing both the name of the bike and that it is locked, and send the photo together with the name of the docking station and the number of the lock in which the city bike is parked via chat, or to post@oslobysykkel.no. If the customer service centre is closed, your trip will not be ended until customer service opens again, and you will therefore not be able to unlock a new city bike. In addition, you will be charged for extended rental. Customer service will end the trip, refund the fee for extended rental and remove the block, provided that you have sent the documentation as described above.

2.11 If a docking station is not visible or is marked as “Closed” in the app, it is not operational. If you nevertheless leave the city bike at a docking station that is not operational, for example due to a power outage, the city bike will not be registered as returned and you will not receive confirmation of this in the app. It is then your responsibility to check that the city bike is locked into the docking station and to document this with a photo. Follow the same procedure as in section 2.10. The consequences of not receiving confirmation in the app are the same as described in section 2.10.

2.12 The system may close completely or partially at short notice, for example due to weather, road conditions or special events/incidents in the city. Check the app for information, and otherwise follow us on social media, Instagram and Facebook, and subscribe to our newsletter for the latest updates. No refund will be given for the period during which the system is unavailable.

2.13 You may stop using the service and delete your registered personal data at any time. Contact us at post@oslobysykkel.no if you wish to do this.

3. Your responsibility

3.1 It is your responsibility to ensure that the city bike is parked correctly and to check the app for confirmation that the trip has ended. See section 2.10 for the procedure if you do not receive this confirmation.

In the app, you should see the message “The bike has been returned” followed by “Thanks for the ride”, the start and end station, the number of minutes the trip took, the name of the city bike you used, and any applicable price if the trip was made using an electric city bike.

If the city bike is not parked correctly and goes missing, you will be liable for compensation after 14 days if it has not reappeared before then. This also applies if you unlock a bike via the Ruter app.

3.2 It is your responsibility to have a phone with enough battery power so that you can check the confirmation in the app.

3.3 You are responsible for returning the city bike to a docking station within the time you have paid for. For the consequences of exceeding the rental period, see section 4. If an electric city bike runs out of battery while you are on a trip, you must still return it to a city bike docking station.

3.4 If you leave the city bike anywhere other than one of our docking stations, you do so entirely at your own risk. If the city bike is stolen, you will be liable for compensation if it does not reappear within 14 days or is severely damaged.

3.5 The city bikes are made available in good condition and are continuously checked and repaired, but you may still find a defective city bike in a docking station. Bauer is not responsible for injuries or damage resulting from a defective city bike that you intentionally or negligently choose to use.

You are responsible for checking that the city bike assigned to you is complete and in safe condition BEFORE using it. Do not use the city bike if there are visible faults or defects. In any case, always check that the following are working and intact:

- Lights

- Brakes

- Wheels, chain and frame

- Pedals and seat

- Handlebars

If you discover any defects, the city bike must not be used. Return the city bike to the docking station and report the damage in the app after you have received confirmation that it has been returned. This helps all the city’s city bike users.

In the app, you can see the battery level of electric city bikes. When the level is low, they will be locked to the docking station.

If you experience damage to the city bike during your trip, contact customer service immediately via chat, or at post@oslobysykkel.no if you are unable to place the city bike in a docking station and report the damage in the app.

3.6 If you receive a fine due to missing lights on the city bike, you must pay this yourself. On electric city bikes, if the front light is not working, you can try pressing the button underneath the light to see whether this turns it on.

3.7 You are responsible for complying with traffic rules and assessing whether conditions are safe enough for cycling

3.8 You are responsible for any injuries or damage you cause to yourself, your property, or others and their property. You are responsible for the costs associated with such damage, and we therefore recommend that you always have valid travel and home contents insurance, which may provide relevant coverage for such damage. Oslo Bysykkel has liability insurance that may apply in incidents where Oslo Bysykkel is legally liable for compensation and where the compensation amount exceeds NOK 100,000. Terms and limitations apply.

3.9 You must not use a city bike while under the influence of alcohol, drugs, medication or other substances that may impair your ability to use the city bike safely.

3.10 You must cycle the city bike responsibly and in a way that does not cause damage to the bike. If you intentionally damage the city bike, you will be liable for compensation and will be blocked from the service.

3.11 You are responsible for entering and updating the information linked to your profile. This can be done both in the app and under your profile at oslobysykkel.no. If your bank card has expired or has insufficient funds, your account may be blocked if you have an outstanding payment linked to your profile.

4. Exceeding the maximum rental period

4.1 If you return the bike after the included time, you can receive an SMS stating that the city bike has not been parked and that your account has been blocked. You cannot unlock bikes or purchase new products while your account is blocked.

4.2 A suspension remains in place for as long as the city bike is considered lost or damaged, not paid for or a payment plan har not started.

4.3 Contact Bauer immediately via chat or at post@oslobysykkel.no if you believe you have received an incorrect warning or suspension.

5. Loss of city bike

5.1 After use, you must return the city bike to one of Oslo Bysykkel’s active docking stations. If the city bike is not parked correctly, and you therefore do not receive confirmation in the app that the city bike has been returned, you will be liable for compensation if it is stolen and does not reappear within 14 days, or if we find it with major damage.

5.2 If the city bike you last used is missing from the system for more than 14 days, it is considered lost, and you will receive an invoice with a compensation claim of NOK 5,000 for a manual city bike and NOK 10,000 for an electric city bike.

The claim will remain even if the city bike is returned to us at a later date. This is to cover costs incurred for extra work in connection with the missing city bike, thorough checks and repairs, as well as the time during which the city bike has not been available to our users.

5.3 If the city bike you last used is not registered as returned and is later found with such extensive damage that it must be scrapped or cannot be used without repairs, you will be liable for compensation. This applies regardless of how much time has passed. You may also be held responsible for necessary costs related to tracking, retrieving, inspecting and repairing the city bike, with a total compensation claim of up to NOK 15,000.

5.4 If you are under 18 years old, your guardians are liable for compensation.

6. Misuse of the service

In the event of misuse of the service, Bauer may permanently block your access to Oslo Bysykkel. Misuse includes, but is not limited to:

- Sharing of product

- Resale

- Incorrect personal information

- Vandalism

- Negligent cycling

- Rude behaviour towards Bauer employees

7. Privacy Policy

When you use Oslo Bysykkel, Bauer will process personal data about you. Please see our privacy policy at https://oslobysykkel.no/personvern-policy, which regulates our processing of your personal data.

8. Changes

These terms and conditions were last updated on 02.07.2026. Bauer reserves the right to amend and update these terms as needed, and by using Oslo Bysykkel you agree to be bound by the terms in force at any given time. We recommend that you regularly read through and familiarize yourself with our terms for the service.
